LAW AND JUSTICE
Our safety and security depends on the cooperation between civil society and law enforcement, and the accountability of those in uniform. I support community policing and engagement between police and the communities they protect. I also support reforming the criminal justice system to increase focus on treatment and rehabilitation and lower the number of people we incarcerate. While we reduce our dependence on contractors – putting the power of justice back in the hands of our civil society – I also want to increase training resources for law enforcement officers and help better allocate personnel based on emerging risks and concerns. Finally, our law enforcement agencies should have our support in sharing intelligence and capabilities. This is especially important as we strive to help our law enforcement agencies become more agile and fully execute their missions in a way that upholds our values.
MY PRIORITIES:
Broaden federal support for communities that want to implement criminal justice and policing reforms
Provide support for communities that want to build racial equity frameworks and community hiring in police forces
Institute federal oversight in cases where communities ask for objective partners
Increase accountability by ending qualified immunity
Implement federal bias and racial sensitivity training to set a tone on a federal law enforcement level
Reallocate federal funding to make sure we are using the appropriate law enforcement agencies for the specific mission, reducing redundancy and promoting right-size police actions
Support criminal justice reform to reexamine penalties for non-violent offenses and lower the number incarcerated, and support treatment, rehabilitation, and service
Focus on implementing strategic plans that reduce risks, costs, and better allocate existing resources
Bring together intelligence and capabilities across law enforcement agencies to help make our systems more cooperative and efficient
Limit the sales of federal military style equipment based on community needs and requirements
Reaffirm that our law enforcement officers are fulfilling their role as the first line of interaction with communities and doing so in a way that reflects our highest ideals and protects their safety
