PROTECTING WORKERS
Unions helped build industry in this country – they protect all of us who work, whether we realize it or not. During our toughest times, they were at the forefront of our industries to make sure we didn’t give up and kept moving forward. They also made sure that we treated our workers fairly as we embarked on the amazing success of the 20th and 21st century. Today there are fewer people who belong to unions than ever before, and for no other reason than a smear campaign on the part of big corporations. Unions helped us establish fair labor practices, a fair wage, safe working conditions, and a sense of family at our workplace. We owe our unions for many of the things we take for granted, including the expectation of reasonable work hours and vacation time – something that allows us to spend more time with our children. We need to encourage union membership, not limit it, because nothing is more democratic than a group of people coming together to fight for their rights, and the rights of everyone in the community.
